Performing Monthly Fire Extinguisher Inspections

By November 16, 2020 No Comments

Performing monthly fire extinguisher inspections –  a properly functioning fire extinguisher in the right place at the right time can make the difference between a small fire and a disaster. Businesses should have a licensed contractor inspect and tag their fire extinguishers every 12 months. However NFPA 10 requires additional inspections. The NFPA 10 standard requires that Fire extinguishers shall be inspected when first placed into service and thereafter at approximately 30-day intervals.

So here’s a brief guide on how to perform a monthly fire extinguisher inspection in your facility:

  1. Confirm the extinguisher is visible, unobstructed, and in its designated location.
  2. Verify the locking pin is intact and the tamper seal is unbroken. Examine the extinguisher for obvious physical damage, corrosion, leakage, or clogged nozzle.
  3. Check the pressure gauge or indicator is in the operable range or position, and lift the extinguisher to ensure it is still full.
  4. Make sure the operating instructions on the nameplate are legible and facing outward.
  5. Take a look at the last professional service date on the tag. (A licensed fire extinguisher maintenance contractor must have inspected the extinguisher within the past 12 months).
  6. Initial and date the back of the tag

Implementing a fire extinguisher inspection software solution that will schedule inspections, making sure that inspections are never missed greatly reduces the paperwork and effort required to maintain inspection compliance. Having access to a web portal where the completed inspection report can be viewed and where summary reports of completed inspections by month can be easily accessed via reports and dashboards aids in the task of keeping a healthcare facilities audit ready. These systems prepare organizations well for when audits occur giving them the tools to quickly and efficiently answer and queries that may arise.

Some fire extinguisher inspection software solutions can create corrective actions for failed inspections and manage these through to closure. Fire extinguisher inspection software solutions can also be used as a complete life safety inspection software where the inspections for all life safety devices can be performed and reported on from a central system. Typically Fire and Life Safety Inspections in an organization can be managed by a single Safety Inspection Software solution that will manage inspections of AED’s, Emergency Showers, Eyewash Stations, Fire Pumps etc. All these systems have a strong element of mobility, where a mobile safety inspection App is a key part of the solution. These Mobile Safety Inspection Apps allow users to perform the inspections at the correct location, can work with or without connection to the internet and will work on any Phone, Tablet or Mobile Computer.
